Dysthymic Disorder Symptoms

Dysthymic disorder or dysthymia is often called a mild form of depression. However, it may have even worse consequences, because it lasts much longer. Today this form of mood disorder becomes more and more common. About a third of psychiatric clinic patients are diagnosed of having dysthymic disorder. According to the statistics, approximately 3% of world population suffers from dysthymia once in their life.

The peculiarity of dysthymia compared to major depression is that it is harder to detect, which results in further progression of the disorder. All these sad facts mean that this problem needs our attention in order to help suffering people. The first thing to do is to diagnose mild depression symptoms.

Detecting dysthymic disorder symptoms

One of the main conditions testifying that a person has dysthymic disorder is duration of the illness. The duration of dysthymia is not less than 2 years for adults and not less than 1 year for children and adolescents. Usually periods of good mood last for about one or two weeks and then the depressive period continues. The condition of a person is characterized by bad mood and low self-esteem which is similar to major depression but symptoms are less severe. Psychologists also distinguish the following symptoms of mild depression:

  • Sleep disorders such as insomnia or hypersomnia as a result of continuous stress and fatigue.
  • Low energy, lack of activity. A person suffering from mild depression can withdraw many activities in order to avoid stressful situations and decrease the probability of failure. In some severe cases, patients may become too passive because they don’t see a reason for doing many daily activities.
  • Major weight changes, both losing and putting on weight.
  • Feeling of despair as a result of helplessness. One of mild depression syndromes is negative appraisal of their past as well as pessimistic appraisal of the future.
  • Social rejection. People suffering from dysthymic disorder usually do not see a problem in lack of communication and they do not tend to speak about their problems with others.
  • Inability to concentrate one’s attention which is often perceived as lack of memory.
  • Increased irritation and anger is suddenly changed by self criticism and feeling of guilt.
